Dr. Brown offers non-surgical procedures such as Botox® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) injections to treat wrinkles in the face. While the effects are temporary, it can be used to treat frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet wrinkles, bands in the neck, and with caution Botox can treat wrinkles around the mouth.

What is Botox? - Botox is a nerve toxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscles into which it is injected. This stops the muscle from being able to transmit its contraction to the overlying skin and thus decreases wrinkles in the treated area. For more information on Botox, please refer to the manufacturer’s website.

Is there generic Botox? - No. At the present time there is no alternative substance that can achieve the same results. No other similar neurotoxin formulations have been FDA approved.

What else is Botox used for? - There are some newer uses for Botox, such as treating patients who are paralyzed on one side of their face. Injecting Botox into the “normal” side of the face results in more symmetrical features. Other conditions that are currently being studied for treatment by Botox are migraine headaches, excessive armpit sweating, severe muscle spasms, and even vascular disease of the fingers.

How long does it take for Botox to work and how long does it last? - You will see the effects of Botox approximately 5-7 days after the initial injection, with the peak effect after 2 weeks. If no change is seen after 2 weeks, a repeat treatment may be necessary. Botox injection effects typically last 4-6 weeks, with some patients showing results up to 9 months.

What wrinkles aren't improved by Botox? - Botox can only help wrinkles that are the effect of underlying muscles that create them. Very fine wrinkles due to collagen structure damage, like “smoker’s lines” or deep sun damage, will not respond to Botox treatment. In addition, older patients with very deep skin wrinkles can expect only a moderate improvement.

How painful are Botox injections? - Most patients feel a small prick at the injection site and a quick burning sensation as the Botox spreads. The discomfort dissipates as soon as the injection is over. Local anesthesia is not necessary for this procedure.

What about redness and bruising? - Redness and bruising are minimal and generally resolve within 24-48 hours.

What restrictions are there after treatment with Botox? - There are no restrictions after treatment with Botox.

What if I have a problem? When should I call the office? - We always welcome calls from patients. If you have any concerns at any time, please feel free to contact our office. If it is an emergency, the answering service is available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.
