TUMMY TUCK RECOVERY

A tummy tuck can leave you feeling great about your slimmer silhouette, but like every surgery, you will need to take adequate time to recover from your procedure. If you are a good tummy tuck candidate, Scottsdale plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Brown will review detailed instructions with you for your post-surgery care, but here we provide general information about what to expect.

THE FIRST WEEK

During your first week of recovery, you should focus on rest. You will need another adult to drive you home from your tummy tuck and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You will experience some swelling and tenderness, but these will peak at about 48 hours after your procedure.

Rest does not mean staying in bed all day though. It is very important for your recovery that you take short walks around your house at least three times a day starting on the day you get home. This will help stimulate blood flow and decrease recovery risks.

THE FIRST MONTH

Your first follow-up appointment will be about 7 days after your surgery. Drains that were placed under your abdominal tissue after your surgery will be removed after 1-2 weeks. At around 2 weeks, you may feel well enough to return to most of your normal activities, although strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided until Dr. Brown releases you. Following all of Dr. Brown’s post-operative instructions is imperative for your recovery.

FULL RECOVERY

By 6 weeks after your surgery, you should be able to return to all of your normal activities, like sports, gardening, and playing with your children. Any swelling and discomfort you may have experienced should have decreased significantly at this point. You will be well on the road to your full recovery. By six months, you should be enjoying the natural-looking results of your procedure.
