What is Umbilicoplasty (Belly Button Surgery)?

Belly button surgery, or umbilicoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces or changes the appearance of the belly button. The surgery can be done by itself, or it can be done as a part of a tummy tuck surgery. The surgery can also be used to repair umbilical hernias and remove former piercing tracts. Women can often be very self-conscious about the stretching the belly button undergoes after a series of pregnancies. In some instances, people would just simply prefer having a more “innie” belly button instead of an “outie”.

How Does It Work?

Dr. Brown will listen carefully to what you’re looking to achieve and will assess the appearance and size of the belly button. Generally speaking, the aim of the surgery is to make the belly button more aesthetically pleasing according to the needs of the patient. Dr. Brown may use a variety of techniques depending on your needs and desires. A variety of internal sutures may be used to create the desired shape and appearance. There are times however, that there is not really any procedure that will create what you desire. That is why Dr. Brown spends a lot of time listening to your expectations.

If you develop a stretched belly button due to rapid weight-loss or weight gain.

Umbilicoplasty Recovery

After surgery, you will be prescribed pain medication to control pain and discomfort. Typically this procedure is performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck and therefore no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise will be allowed for 6 weeks.
