Although it’s rarely discussed, gynecomastia or male breast enlargement is a common concern. It is the result of the overdevelopment of male breast tissue, an over-accumulation of fat on the chest, or a combination of both. Believe it or not, gynecomastia affects up to 50% of men in the U.S.

In most cases, male breast enlargement occurs because of genetics, excessive weight gain, over-the-counter and prescription medications, and steroids. Fortunately, it can be resolved by gynecomastia surgery. Essentially, gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery.

During the procedure, I’ll remove fat and tissue from your breasts to leave a man with a masculine look. Let’s take a closer look at gynecomastia surgery so you know what to expect if you decide to undergo it.

How Gynecomastia Surgery Works

Gynecomastia surgery combines the surgical excision of breast tissue and liposuction. I’ll make an incision around the areola which is the small ring of pigmented skin around the nipples. Then, I’ll remove any dense breast tissue and excess fat so you can enjoy a smooth contour. While you may notice immediate results, they will  continue to improve over the next three months. It’ll likely take anywhere from 6 to 12 months for your skin to tighten and develop a new chest shape.

As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a stable weight, you can enjoy the results of male breast reduction surgery. Keep in mind, however, that this procedure will not stop natural signs of aging such as loose skin.

Good Candidates for Male Breast Reduction

Sometimes, excess breast tissue in men can be the result of a medical condition other than gynecomastia. Therefore, you can expect me to perform a thorough physical exam and confirm that you are in fact living with male breast enlargement.

To undergo gynecomastia surgery, you need to be at or near your goal weight, have fat and breast tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise, and have good skin elasticity. A private consultation in my office is the best way to determine whether you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

“Dr. Richard Brown and his staff are the best! They make you feel totally at home, at ease and they are great about paying attention to what you have to say. My experience was a bit traumatic for me and they were so wonderful to help me relax and actually somewhat enjoy my experience. I would highly recommend them for any kind of plastic surgery that you might need and KNOW that you are in the best of hands!!” *
