What Is The Recovery Time For A Tummy Tuck?

If you’re struggling to achieve a flat stomach, a tummy tuck may be right for you. Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin from above the abdominal muscles and repairs muscles that have been weakened or separated.

It can leave you with a more flat, contoured abdomen you’ve always dreamed of. Since a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, you may be wondering what the recovery time is like. Keep reading to find out.

How the Tummy Tuck Recovery Process Works

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Brown will make an incision over the lower abdomen and elevate the abdominal skin off of the underlying six pack muscles. Therefore, the recovery process will take time as you allow the tissue layers to heal together again. You will have to wait at least six weeks before you engage in any strenuous activities or heavy lifting. Depending on the nature of your job, you may need to take a full month off if light duty work is not allowed.

While the tummy tuck recovery process seems lengthy, it is well worth the results, and is no longer than a breast augmentation. Once you’ve fully recovered from your tummy tuck, you’ll have a great looking abdomen for decades as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle of eating and exercise.

Good Candidates for a Tummy Tuck

If you are at or near your ideal weight yet cannot seem to get rid of loose or sagging belly skin despite how healthy you eat or how active you are, you are likely a good candidate for a tummy tuck. This surgery is not a good option if you are overweight and in search of a weight loss solution. Abdominoplasty surgery IS NOT weight loss surgery. Everyone carries fatty tissue around the internal organs called visceral fat. This fat causes bulging of the abdomen making it hard for Dr. Brown to create a flat abdominal appearance. The only way to get rid of visceral fat is through weight loss. The primary goal of a tummy tuck is to tighten loose skin and repair muscle damage after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

In addition Dr. Brown does not recommend it to women who plan on becoming pregnant or losing an excessive amount of weight. Surgery should be reserved for after those situations.

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are also in good overall health. Those with health conditions that place them at a high risk for an elective procedure may not be the right candidate for this procedure.
