Before & After: What to Expect from Breast Augmentation Surgery

Women decide to enhance their breasts through breast augmentation surgery for many reasons, from filling out their clothing to regaining some of their more youthful curves. Choosing to undergo a breast enhancement procedure is a personal decision about what’s best for you and your body – it’s about attaining your vision for yourself.

Good candidates for breast augmentation surgery include women who are interested in any of the following:

  • A change in breast size or shape
  • A correction of breast asymmetry
  • Breast reconstruction after mastectomy

How Breast Augmentation is Performed

Breast augmentation involves the use of saline or silicone implants, placed either on top of the pectoralis (chest) muscle, or partially underneath. Dr. Brown will go over the pros and cons of all the different implant types, as well as your sizing options and the surgical approaches available to you based on your own unique anatomy.

Saline breast implants feature a silicone shell and are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty and filled once they are in place. Generally speaking, this requires a smaller incision than that needed to place a silicone implant.

Silicone implants are prefilled with cohesive silicone gel. They offer a more natural feel and are a great option if you have thin skin and minimal breast tissue. After Dr. Brown properly places the implants via a special funnel to ensure sterility, he will close the incision carefully with sutures and place dressings over the incisions to aid with the healing process. In most cases, breast augmentation takes about an hour to complete under general anesthesia.

The Breast Augmentation Recovery Process

After breast augmentation, you will likely experience some soreness and fatigue for a few days. The good news is you’ll be able to return to your daily routine after a few days as long as you refrain from heavy lifting. If you work a desk job, you can expect to resume work a week following the procedure. Dr. Brown will discuss the recovery process with you in detail during your pre-operative visit.

Over time, your breast implants will “settle,” developing into a beautiful, more natural shape. As the swelling subsides, the full result of a breast augmentation is typically evident by the three month mark, though the scars will continue to improve for many months.

Good Candidates or Breast Augmentation

If you are in good general health and hoping to enhance the size and/or shape of your breasts, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation. If you have small breasts, it can help you improve volume; if your breasts are sagging or deflated due to age or childbirth, breast implants can help restore lost volume. A private consultation with Dr. Brown is a great way to determine if you’re a good fit for this procedure.

He had previously been exercising and eating healthy but had areas that were not responsive to these actions. We discussed liposuction for contouring the areas that he was concerned about. I removed 550 cc from the right flank and 575 cc from the left flank, for a total of 1100 cc off of the abdominal area. The patient is seen here six months after surgery and is very pleased with his results. You can see that he has more defined abdominal muscles and a much better contour over the sides and hip area. fusion_global=”7410″]6 year old female who I consulted with in my Scottsdale and Sun City office to discuss immediate bilateral tissue expander reconstruction.
