Is Your Plastic Surgeon Board Certified?

by | May 30, 2014

Is Your Plastic Surgeon Board Certified? Before considering any time of plastic surgery, it is imperative to be certain that the plastic surgeon you choose is Board Certified. There is a large number of procedures in the United States that are being performed by unlicensed individuals, claiming they are plastic surgeons.

Phoenix’s board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Brown says, there are many factors to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon, but it’s important to do some research on the doctor you want to perform your procedure and verify that they are Board Certified.

It is important to note that even physicians that have an M.D. do not have the training required to become a board-certified plastic surgeon. A board-certified plastic surgeon has had the proper training to ensure that they can perform reconstructive surgery, plastic surgery, and properly perform cosmetic surgery.

There are no laws that state than an M.D. can’t perform different types of cosmetic surgery, but that doesn’t mean that they had the extensive training of a board certified plastic surgeon.

The American Board of Plastic Surgey states that a board certified plastic surgeon has done the following:

  • At least 5 years surgical residency; 2 years of which in plastic surgery
  • Passed reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery exams
  • Can perform plastic or reconstruction surgical procedures

Once you’ve made the decision to have plastic surgery of any kind, you want to feel confident that you’ve chosen a doctor who is properly trained and has the experience to create the results you want.
