Excessive breast tissue in the male chest area, referred to as gynecomastia, can be a severe detriment in one’s self-confidence and social comfort level. Male breast reduction surgery is a procedure that helps remove excess fat and glandular tissue, allowing a flatter contour to the chest.

Dr. Brown will evaluate your specific case to see what surgical technique is best suited for you. Your procedure may call for liposuction, surgical removal, or a combination of both. Ultimately, excessive glandular breast tissue will be taken out, usually via an incision at the junction of your areola and chest wall skin. For men with much larger breasts additional incisions may be required. In most cases a surgical drain will be left for a minimum of one week.

Are reluctant to remove your shirt in public, or wear tight fit clothing due to the size of your breasts.

The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours, sometimes slightly longer, and is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Brown will determine what is best for your procedure to provide the best results. It is recommended for you to wear loose clothing and to bring your compression garment on the day of surgery. You will be able to go home the same day in most cases.

Prior to your surgery long-term instructions will be provided, such as how long you should wear your compression dressing and to what degree you can participate in physical activity. After your surgery Dr. Brown’s staff will assist you through the entire recovery process. Dressings will be placed over your incisions and you’ll be provided a support garment. If there is a surgical drain you will be provided instructions for care. Dr. Brown will be sure to detail what you can and can’t do during the recovery period. You’ll be scheduled for a follow-up visit within one week. The recovery period can sometimes take up to 3 months for final shape, as the swelling subsides and the final result is achieved.
