Advances in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentations have been around since the late 1800s, when women began experimenting with the reconstruction, size modification and enhancement of the breast. Since then, breast augmentation surgery has come a long way. As a Scottsdale and Sun City plastic surgery office, we’d like to fill you in on just how far breast augmentation has come.

Breast implants

One of the biggest changes during the advances in breast augmentation are the actual implants. Now you have the choice between silicone and saline implants. Silicone and saline implants have been around since the 1960s, but have received updates to make them safer and more natural looking.

We also offer Natrelle® 410 Shaped Gel Implants, a very natural teardrop shaped implant that has become very popular. These implants are filled with silicone and have a thinner top and wider bottom to mimic the shape of a natural breast. Our office also offers teardrop shaped implants produced by Mentor, Sientra as well as Allergan’s Natrelle implant.

There are positive sides to each type of implant so doing your research and speaking with Dr. Brown before your procedure is important so you can have the look you’re dreaming of.

Incision Options

The type of incision you receive during your breast augmentation will depend on the implant you choose. The great news is our incisions are small and sometimes undetectable if taken care of properly during your post-operative time. This means smaller scars, another plus side to the advances in breast augmentation surgery.

Incisions can be made around the nipple (periariolar), underneath the breast (inframammary) or in the armpit (transaxillary). Dr. Brown will go over all of these options during your breast augmentation consultation appointment.

Implant placement

You will sit down with Dr. Brown during your consultation to discuss where your implant will be placed. There are two options:

  • Subglandular – below your breast tissue, above chest muscles
  • Submuscular – below breast tissue and chest muscles

There’s reasons to use each type of breast implant placement, and Dr. Brown will take time to ensure you’re going to have the best looking breast augmentation possible based on all factors.

Recovery

Your recovery from a breast augmentation surgery is far less painful and severe as Dr. Brown’s techniques will have you back to regular activity within 6 weeks. As with all surgeries, this depends on your recovery, but most patients have full range of motion in their arms and shoulders within the second week of recovery.
