3 Important Rules to Follow After Plastic Surgery

after plastic surgeryEach surgery that Dr. Richard Brown performs has its own set of rules for postoperative care. However, there are 3 important rules to follow after plastic surgery that apply to each and every type of procedure Dr. Brown performs as a plastic surgeon in Scottsdale and Sun City. From breast augmentations to tummy tucks and everything in between, these 3 rules will help you in your recovery.

3 Important Rules to Follow After Plastic Surgery

Have an adult with you for 24 hours following your procedure.

This is an extremely important safety measure that must be followed. For 24 hours following your release from the surgery center, an adult will need to stay with you to ensure your safety, so that you don’t accidentally fall, lose track of time and over-medicate.

Rest and allow your body to recuperate from the anesthesia.

Though you will begin to feel better and more alert in the hours following surgery, anesthesia can take a full 72 hours to completely wear off. This is why rest and relaxation is an important part of the healing process. Overexerting yourself can be dangerous when the effects of anesthesia are still at work. Allow the adult staying with you to help you during your recovery as you listen to your body and give it the rest it needs to recover.

Drink plenty of fluids.after plastic surgery

The more water you drink, the faster the medications used during surgery will be flushed from your system. Staying hydrated will also help in the healing process as your body recovers from your plastic surgery procedure.

If you keep in mind these 3 important rules to follow after plastic surgery, your healing process will begin quickly and you’ll be back to your active self in no time. Dr. Brown will give you postoperative instructions to take home with you following your procedure that will have rules to follow after plastic surgery that are specific to your procedure.

5 Things to Remember During Breast Augmentation Recovery

during breast augmentation recoveryBreast augmentations are our specialty as a plastic surgery center in Scottsdale and Sun City. Our goal is to give you a body you can be proud of while offering you the best care in the valley. But once you leave after surgery, the recovery time is out of our hands. We have a few tips to make sure you are comfortable, relaxed and careful during your breast augmentation recovery.

1. No lifting over 10 pounds for six weeks

Lifting can not only be incredibly painful during the first few days or weeks after recovery, but it can hinder your breast augmentation recovery. We want you to relax and not strain yourself using the muscles that have been affected by the procedure. Additionally, scars take a minimum of six weeks to heal, so we don’t want you to put additional strain on your new incisions.

2. Wear sports bra/garment and no underwire until otherwise told

The undergarment we send you home in may feel like overkill. And it’s definitely not the most stylish thing you’ve worn. But it is imperative you wear proper undergarments during your breast augmentation recovery. Support is key to making sure your breasts settle properly over time.

3. You will be sore. Listen to your body and take it easy

This is one of the most important post-operative instructions. Your body will tell you when you’re pushing it too hard. For those of you who like to go, go, go you’ll need to slow down and let your body heal. When the pain subsides, it’s easy to get carried away with activities so take time to lay down and keep up your fluid intake.

4. Refrain from any strenuous exercise for six weeks

Light walking is encouraged during the initial recovery period. This will help eliminate the risk of blood clots in your legs. Three weeks post-surgery you can begin light cardio activity. Walking outside or the use of a stationary bike are good ways to stay active, but be careful. Six weeks after your procedure you can return to normal gym activity. If you’ve had submuscular implants, discuss your exercise routine with Dr. Brown to make sure you’re aware of how weight lifting can affect you.

5. When instructed, begin your daily breast massage to prevent encapsulation.

Encapsulation is when the tissue surrounding your implant begins to harden. This can be painful for you and change the look and feel of your breast augmentation. Dr. Brown will recommend when to begin massaging your breasts during breast augmentation recovery based on how your healing is going. It’s important to follow the regimen of massaging daily because if capsular contraction begins, it can lead to a corrective breast augmentation.

Dr. Brown will provide a full list of post-operative instructions for you to follow during breast augmentation recovery, each as important as the next. For more information on Dr. Brown’s breast augmentation techniques, call 480-947-2455.

The Scoop on Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation Surgery

breastfeeding after breast augmentationBreast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures procedures we perform as a Scottsdale plastic surgery center. Our patients are always well informed before undergoing plastic surgery and one of the top questions we get from breast augmentation patients is if breastfeeding after breast augmentation is possible.

The short answer is yes. With Phoenix, Arizona board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brown’s expertise, patients rarely have problems breast feeding after breast augmentation surgery. We do recommend that if you know you will be starting a family soon that you hold off on the breast augmentation during a Mommy Makeover after childbirth. If you decide to have your operation before having children, there are a few ways we can reduce the chance of damage to your milk ducts.

Submuscular implant

Implants can be placed above or below the breast muscle. Inserting a submuscular implant lowers the risk of affecting the milk duct. There’s other factors that will help you and Dr. Brown decide whether submuscular implants are the right choice for you. It’s important to bring all of your concerns and questions to Dr. Brown’s attention during your consultation so he can help make the best decision for your needs.

Incision location

Breast implants can be inserted from 3 different incision locations. The periariolar incision, or incision around the nipple, can have the highest risk of affecting breastfeeding. You can consider having your incision placed underneath your breast (inframammary) or in the armpit (transaxillary). This will lessen the likelihood that the milk production or milk ducts could be compromised.

It’s important to spend time with Dr. Brown before your procedure going over which options will be best for you and your desired results. Not all incision types, implant styles or implant placements will work for every patient. It’s also important to keep in mind that sometimes women will have issues with milk production even without a breast augmentation, and that there are ways to supplement breastfeeding.

If you’d like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Brown to find out if breast augmentation before children is the right choice for you, call our Sun City or Scottsdale plastic surgery office at 480-947-2455.

Advances in Breast Augmentation Surgery

advances in breast augmentationBreast augmentations have been around since the late 1800s, when women began experimenting with the reconstruction, size modification and enhancement of the breast. Since then, breast augmentation surgery has come a long way. As a Scottsdale and Sun City plastic surgery office, we’d like to fill you in on just how far breast augmentation has come.

Breast implants

One of the biggest changes during the advances in breast augmentation are the actual implants. Now you have the choice between silicone and saline implants. Silicone and saline implants have been around since the 1960s, but have received updates to make them safer and more natural looking.

We also offer Natrelle® 410 Shaped Gel Implants, a very natural teardrop shaped implant that has become very popular. These implants are filled with silicone and have a thinner top and wider bottom to mimic the shape of a natural breast. Our office also offers teardrop shaped implants produced by Mentor, Sientra as well as Allergan’s Natrelle implant.

There are positive sides to each type of implant so doing your research and speaking with Dr. Brown before your procedure is important so you can have the look you’re dreaming of.

Incision Options

The type of incision you receive during your breast augmentation will depend on the implant you choose. The great news is our incisions are small and sometimes undetectable if taken care of properly during your post-operative time. This means smaller scars, another plus side to the advances in breast augmentation surgery.

Incisions can be made around the nipple (periariolar), underneath the breast (inframammary) or in the armpit (transaxillary). Dr. Brown will go over all of these options during your breast augmentation consultation appointment.

Implant placement

You will sit down with Dr. Brown during your consultation to discuss where your implant will be placed. There are two options:

  • Subglandular – below your breast tissue, above chest muscles
  • Submuscular – below breast tissue and chest muscles

There’s reasons to use each type of breast implant placement, and Dr. Brown will take time to ensure you’re going to have the best looking breast augmentation possible based on all factors.

Recovery

Your recovery from a breast augmentation surgery is far less painful and severe as Dr. Brown’s techniques will have you back to regular activity within 6 weeks. As with all surgeries, this depends on your recovery, but most patients have full range of motion in their arms and shoulders within the second week of recovery.

mommy makeoverWomen’s bodies are nothing short of a miracle when it comes to having children. All of the changes your body is able to make to allow your baby to grow inside of you are remarkable. But after giving birth, the changes may have lasting effects on your self esteem.

The idea behind a Mommy Makeover is to get your confidence back so you can focus on what’s important: being a mother. Dr. Brown and the rest of us here at our Scottsdale and Sun City plastic surgery offices want to help you get back to a body you can be proud of. Who doesn’t want to be a hot mom!

Here’s what a Mommy Makeover consists of…

Liposuction

We can perform liposuction on multiple parts of your body. Some women will carry extra weight in these areas after having a child:

  • Thighs
  • Lower back
  • Stomach
  • Upper arms

Liposuction is a relatively easy procedure that can help reduce the amount of that stubborn baby weight.

Tummy Tuck

One of the most common problem areas after having a child is the stomach area. The effects of growing a child inside your body are nothing to be ashamed of, but some mothers miss the tight, toned tummy they had before.

Having a tummy tuck is the best way to get rid of the loose skin and stretch marks that liposuction simply can’t eliminate.

Breast Augmentation and/or Breast Lift

Next to the tummy area, breasts are the second area most affected by child birth. Whether you breastfeed or not, the tissue and skin of your breasts will most likely change. Some mothers can simply go for a lift or an augmentation, but sometimes, in order to achieve the best results, both are necessary.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

The heat of summer has arrived in Phoenix, and it’s time to start taking your summer wardrobe seriously. With swim-suit season in full swing, you might be concerned about possible scarring from your upcoming breast augmentation procedure. Luckily, Phoenix plastic surgeon Dr. Brown offers three different incision options to help you best meet your aesthetic pool-side requirements.

Each breast incision option offers different advantages:

  • Periariolar Incision (around the nipple) – This incision location is best suited for women who want a potentially less obvious scar that is easily hidden under a bathing suit. Periariolar incisions are generally too small for a silicone breast implant.
  • Inframammary Incision (underneath the breast) – This is the most common incision location because it offers several advantages. Like the periariolar incision, the inframammary scar is bikini-friendly, inconspicuously hidden under the breast fold. Inframammary incisions can also accommodate both silicone and saline breast augmentation implants.
  • Transaxillary Incision (in the armpit) – This incision is perhaps the least favorable for pool-side swimwear. Though the incision keeps the scar away from the breast, it lies in a position that cannot be covered up by a bathing suit. Transaxillary incisions also limit your breast augmentation options to saline implants.

Choosing an incision location for you breast augmentation procedure is an important step to achieving the end results you desire most. Understanding the benefits and limitations of each option will help you have a more comfortable and successful experience. At our Scottsdale, Sun City and Phoenix area office, Dr. Brown will assess your needs, answer your breast augmentation questions and help you make an informed decision that best suits you and your body.

To determine which breast augmentation incision location will most effectively meet your aesthetic and physical needs, contact Dr. Richard J. Brown at 877-590-1169 to schedule a consultation today.
